So I just read this article about Tesla’s autopilot system and apparently, Pete Buttigieg (the US secretary of transportation) doesn’t think it should be called “autopilot” because it gives people a false sense of security. Basically, he’s saying that humans still need to be in control of the car and responsible for any accidents.
I totally get where he’s coming from. I mean, I’ve heard stories of people getting too comfortable with using autopilot and not paying attention to the road. It’s scary to think about how quickly something could go wrong if the driver isn’t ready to take over.
But at the same time, I can see why Tesla calls it “autopilot.” It’s a cool, futuristic sounding term that really captures the imagination. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to try it out for myself.
Overall, I think the biggest takeaway here is that we still have a long way to go before fully autonomous cars are a reality. Until then, it’s up to us as drivers to make sure we’re staying alert and in control, no matter how fancy our car’s technology may be.
