SpaceX Dragon capsule passing by Arkansas sky returning from Ax-2 mission

If you were looking up at the sky last Saturday night in Arkansas, you may have seen a surprise passerby — the SpaceX Dragon capsule. After spending six months attached to the International Space Station (ISS) for the Ax-2 science mission, the capsule was making its return trip to Earth.

According to NASA, the spacecraft was carrying over 4,400 pounds of research samples and other equipment back to our planet. Initially, the capsule was scheduled to return to Earth on Friday, but weather conditions made for an uncertain landing. It wasn’t until Saturday evening that the spacecraft could begin its descent, which created a visible spectacle for those of us on the ground.

SpaceX’s Cargo Resilience craft took the Dragon’s place as the ISS continued its orbit. The two space vehicles will meet up again in a few months for the next Cargo Dragon mission.

The successful return of the Dragon capsule marks another accomplishment for SpaceX and their collaboration in furthering scientific achievements on the ISS. This is especially important as private companies continue to play a larger role in space travel and research. The sight of a spacecraft passing by our own little corner of the world is a reminder of the incredible feats that humans are capable of.
