SpaceX Cargo Dragon, the spacecraft that carried supplies, scientific experiments, and other equipment to the International Space Station (ISS), has now completed its mission and returned back to Earth. The spacecraft was initially launched on December 6, 2020 and spent nearly four weeks attached to the ISS.
What caught our attention was the fact that the Cargo Dragon also brought back a number of experiment samples and other materials from the space station for further analysis on Earth. These samples and equipment could potentially help researchers uncover more about the effects of space on various materials, including biological samples.
During its stay on the ISS, the Cargo Dragon was loaded with approximately 5,200 pounds of supplies both for the astronauts and for experiments. This marks the first cargo spacecraft to autonomously visit and depart from the station’s new docking port. The spacecraft’s safe return back to Earth represents another achievement for the ever-growing space exploration industry.
The SpaceX Cargo Dragon becoming the first spacecraft to autonomously dock to the ISS’s new docking port is a significant achievement. With the spacecraft having transported supplies and equipment to the ISS for over a month, it’s not unlikely that the samples and data collected could provide invaluable information that can drive future space research. With these breakthroughs and achievements, the idea of space exploration is becoming more and more tangible, giving us a glimpse of what human capabilities can accomplish beyond planet Earth.
