SpaceX and Russian company Vast are joining forces to build the first ever private space station. The new space station, named “Stasrbase,” will function as a commercial destination for researchers, manufacturers, and private citizens. The initiative marks the second major partnership SpaceX has established in recent months, following its deal with NASA to send astronauts to the International Space Station. The private space station will orbit the Earth at an altitude of approximately 400 kilometers, which is higher than the current altitude of the International Space Station. The company intends to launch its first module in 2025, with the goal of eventually expanding the space station with additional modules over time. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the partnership will “create a new era of space commerce.” The combination of world-class space technology with private investment could enable even more private access to space for years to come.
The creation of a privately-owned space station is a significant step forward in the commercialization of space. The initiative proves that space technology is no longer the sole domain of nation-states and its availability to private companies, individual researchers, and even space tourists will lead to exciting new possibilities in space exploration. Besides, with the success of SpaceX and similar companies, we will soon begin seeing people traveling into space more frequently, opening up a new era of space travel for all of us.
