SpaceX, the space exploration company founded by Elon Musk, is partnering with a start-up called Axiom Space to launch a commercial space station. This space station is aiming to be the first privately funded habitat for humans in space, and it’s not the first time that SpaceX has been involved in human space exploration.
Axiom Space has been raising funding since its inception in 2016 and expects to launch its commercial module as early as 2024. The module plans to house up to seven people and will be attached to the International Space Station (ISS) for roughly six months before detaching to become a free-floating space station.
While the ISS has always been funded by the government, this marks the first time a private company is launching its own module in space. Axiom has also already signed a contract with NASA to use the same docking ports that Boeing and SpaceX use, making it easier to access the ISS.
This project has many implications for the future of space exploration, as it marks the beginning of commercial space travel. The possibilities for scientific research, commercial development, and leisure activities in space are vast and this collaboration between SpaceX and Axiom is just the beginning. It’s an exciting time for the field of space exploration as we begin to explore new opportunities in the final frontier.
