So I just read this article about Lauren Boebert, the Republican congresswoman from Colorado who’s been making headlines lately. Apparently, during a Twitter reveal where she was announced as a speaker at a conservative event, people were more excited about Elon Musk than Florida governor Ron DeSantis - which I found pretty funny.
According to the article, Boebert was included in a list of speakers for the Western Conservative Summit, and the organization behind the event tweeted out a video announcing all the names. But when they got to Boebert, the Twitter chat was flooded with comments about Elon Musk - who was apparently livestreaming his own SpaceX launch at the same time.
As someone who’s been on Twitter during a major event, I can definitely imagine how that happened! But what struck me about this article was the way it highlights the way politicians are competing for attention in a world where there are so many other distractions - from viral cat videos to private space travel.
At the same time, I think it’s important to pay attention to what’s happening in the political world, even if it doesn’t always seem as exciting as a SpaceX launch or a funny meme. Whether it’s Lauren Boebert making headlines or Ron DeSantis proposing controversial laws, these are the people who are shaping the policies that will affect our lives and our communities.
So, while it might be tempting to tune out the political noise and focus on other things, it’s worth remembering that what happens in Washington (and in state capitals) can have a real impact on our daily lives. Plus, sometimes it’s just fun to watch politicians compete for our attention - even if they come in second to Elon Musk!
