So, I just read this crazy article about how Twitter has been suppressing tweets that contain certain words. Apparently, Elon Musk exposed the line of code that they were using to do it. Basically, if someone tried to tweet something with a banned word, the tweet wouldn’t show up in search results or on people’s timelines.
Now, I don’t know about you, but that seems pretty sketchy to me. Who is deciding which words are “banned”? And what if someone is tweeting something important that happens to contain a banned word? Seems like a slippery slope to me.
But here’s the kicker: Elon Musk actually tweeted the banned words to see what would happen, and he got no response. So it’s not just about certain “offensive” words. It seems like Twitter is actively censoring, and that’s not cool.
I mean, I get that they don’t want a bunch of hate speech or whatever on their platform, but where do we draw the line? And who gets to draw it?
All of this just makes me think about how much power these social media companies have. They can basically control what we see and what we don’t, without us even realizing it. And that’s pretty freaky.
Anyway, the main takeaway here is that we should always be aware of what’s happening behind the scenes when we use these platforms. Just because we don’t see something doesn’t mean it’s not there. And we need to keep asking questions and holding them accountable.
