So, I came across this really interesting article about Elon Musk and Twitter canceling a deal to stream a documentary titled ‘What Is A Woman?’- which is a big deal. According to the article, Musk responded to the cancellation by saying that it was ‘a mistake by many people at Twitter’. Musk seems to be suggesting that Twitter made a mistake by censoring content that they find controversial- which seems to be a pretty big issue in the current social media landscape.
It’s funny, because just the other day I was trying to post a photo on Instagram with a caption that included the word ‘breast’ (it was a photo of my friend’s pet bird sitting on her chest- get your mind out of the gutter!). But Instagram kept blocking it! I had to repost with different wording- it just goes to show how sensitive these platforms can be about certain topics.
But anyway, back to the article. It sounds like the documentary in question is about the debate over the definition of ‘woman’- which is definitely a hot topic right now. It seems like Musk feels that Twitter should have allowed the documentary to be streamed, regardless of whether or not they personally agree with its content.
Overall, I think this article brings up important questions about the role of social media platforms in regulating content- and about our own responsibility as users to engage with content even if it challenges our own views. We live in a time where it’s too easy to just block or ignore things we don’t like- but perhaps we should be more open to engaging with difficult topics instead.
